Records That Kicked My Ass (May 2016)

Yes, I actually kept my word this time. It remains to be seen how long I’ll be able to keep up this schedule but for now doing this once a month post might work. Regardless, here are 5 records that really blew me away this month. Unlike last month I actually listened to a lot more records this time so I actually had to narrow down my choices this time to only 5. Hopefully these are some records that might interest whoever is reading this (assuming  you haven’t already heard them already).

Records That Kicked My Ass (April 2016)

Because it’s been months since I’ve posted anything and I’ve been struggling to think of a reason to post something. I’m going to try and do a post like this at least at the end of every month (it might not turn out that way, but I’m going to try and do a write up like this at the end of every month. For the last couple of months I’ve been listening to a lot of podcasts, so I haven’t really been listening to a whole lot of new music. Having said that, my music library has been expanding in those months so I’ve tried to take time while working to actually listen to new music. So what I’m going to try and do with this post is talk about a couple of records I’ve listened to during the month that particularly blew me away or that I’ve been playing on repeat. These albums are in no particular order.

Top 15 Films of 2015

As anyone who I’ve kept up regular contact with will probably know, my interests have shifted a bit from music to film (what I got my degree in) – hence a shift in this blog. I watch a lot more movies than I do listen to music at this point (I’ve seen well over 100 films from 2015 this year just to put things into perspective). Hopefully those who retain an interest in this blog and my writing and filmmaking and other stuff find this list at least somewhat interesting and maybe check out some of these films (if you haven’t seen them already).

Top 15 Albums of 2015

Well my goal to keep on a regular reviewing schedule pretty much went out the window. Life takes over sometimes and then there are the times when I just don’t feel like writing anything. Maybe since I’m finished with school now I will be able to write more regularly about stuff (maybe being the key word here). Either way here’s my top 15 albums of this year (as well as a couple honorable mentions). I’ll be posting my favorite films of the year tomorrow.

Film Review: Time Out of Mind (2014)

time out of mind

There are many sides to the persona known to the world as Richard Gere. There’s the handsome, charming guy we know from his romantic comedies – probably the side most known to the world. The more complex character actor who we witness in select films (Days of Heaven, I’m Not There, Arbitrage). That’s kind of it… honestly. I like Richard Gere, he seems like a nice enough guy and I genuinely enjoy watching him on screen even though he’s been in some really (REALLY!!!) shit movies. But for whatever reason(s) he had for wanting to make this film, he showed a side to him which I can’t remember ever seeing before.

Director Spotlight: Michelangelo Antonioni

It’s hard for me to say exactly why I’m focusing on Italian maestro Michelangelo Antonioni for my first article on Directors. He isn’t one of my all time favorites, although he has produced many films that I do indeed like, some very much, and at times I find him too oblique for his own good; but, there’s always something there. There’s something that grabs me in some way in every one of his films. There’s a spark, an idea, a gesture or camera movement/placement, in each and every one of his films there’s something there that strikes me. Even at his most patience testing and frustrating – there’s something there.
